Dear Precious Readers,
UK has just banned flights from 6 African countries, due to fears over a new COVID-19 variant. Israel has also banned flights from South Africa.
I am worried again, worried because one-third of the new infections in South Africa seems attributable to a new variant (B.1.1.529) which one scientist describes as “a new jump in evolution”. I am worried because this new variant has prompted a fresh wave of international travel restrictions.
I am also worried that cases have surged in Europe and other places as well. NaCOVERC and MoHS urge everyone to remain vigilant. NaCOVERC hotel-managed quarantine for unvaccinated passengers arriving at the Freetown International Airport, as well as the Rapid Antigen and PCR COVID-19 tests, will continue.
Take your COVID-19 vaccine NOW if you are 18+, and wear your face mask properly in public spaces and transport. The festive season is here and the cliche to ‘Papa Govment’ is “allow me to enjoy myself”. If we don’t pay the price now, we might get into a fourth wave, see cases rise again and even in hospitals, see flights from Sierra Leone banned, and slip back into an era of restrictions.
This is the reality always, and we can avoid it.
Stay blessed!
